Education Sector

Mashonaland West Province has a steadily expanding education and human capital development sector that supports its 1.9 million residents. The province in 2022 had 683 schools, comprising 511 primary and 172 secondary schools, with Hurungwe and Zvimba hosting the highest numbers. The Government of Zimbabwe, through Devolution Funds (IGFT), continues to invest in the construction of new classroom blocks, staff accommodation, and improved learning infrastructure. Examples include Chidobera Primary School in Makonde and multiple classroom blocks completed in Zvimba and Nyaminyami. Despite progress, challenges remain in areas such as shortages of learning materials, ICT infrastructure gaps, and inadequate teachers’ accommodation, all of which present opportunities for targeted improvement.

The province is also strengthening tertiary education and skills development as part of its human capital transformation agenda. Mashonaland West hosts three universities Chinhoyi University of Technology (CUT), Zimbabwe Open University, and Catholic University as well as eight Vocational Training Centres (VTCs) that provide skills training in agriculture, engineering, business, and technical fields. Plans are underway to establish a polytechnic college, expand Centres of Excellence, and develop additional VTCs across districts such as Kariba, Sanyati and Mhondoro-Ngezi. Investment opportunities include constructing tertiary institutions, upgrading training facilities, supplying e-learning equipment, and developing innovation hubs that align with the province’s economic priorities in agriculture, mining, tourism and manufacturing. Through these initiatives, Mashonaland West aims to build a competitive, skills-driven workforce that can accelerate provincial and national development.
